Stranger Things Type Beat | December 2017 | "Alone (Out of Time)" Produced by Leigh Dickey | Beats and Speaks

Picture

Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! I’ve got more BRAND SPANKING NEW MUSIC FOR YOU ALL TODAY! This latest original instrumental composition inspired by another UBER POPULAR Netflix series, “Stranger Things”. This composition all began with the “Light Cycle” synth lead in GarageBand. I pitched the “Light Cycle” lead down almost as low as I possibly could. I think it was only raised 2 or 3 octaves from the very bottom. I played the “Light Cycle” part in a 64th note pattern and with this entire composition I wanted something really dark, ominous, and scary sounding, kind of like you’re walking through the woods or taking a short cut late, late, REALLY LATE at night! I wanted to play the “Light Cycle” quickly, but I wanted it to have a sort of punch and kick to it also. That part of the song starts out pretty simple and straightforward, but then changes on ya! Which wasn’t initially what I was going for, but I’m glad it turned out that way.

The “Neon Koto” synth classic patch was next, and it was here where I decided to just do variations on a few scales in order to get the desired feel and effect that I was striving for. So, with the “Neon Koto” patch, I played an eighth note scale, a couple times in succession, up and down, and to my wonderment, it added to the ambience that I began to build with the “Light Cycle” patch on the first layer. In other words, YAY, I WAS HAPPY!

From there, I laid down an eighth note scale with the “Soft Analog” patch going down the scale in succession, and really I added that pattern and patch just to accent the “Neon Koto” and “Light Cycle” patches above it, respectively, and I think it worked! All three synthesizers and their patterns just seem to fit and work together REALLY, REALLY WELL! It just builds on the construction, feel, tempo, and the word of the day... AMBIENCE of the whole track! I love how all of the synthesizers just meld and weave through one another extremely well! Once the synth patches and patterns were in place and laid down, I moved onto the backbone of any and every musical composition, THE DRUMS!

I started the drum kit like I normally do, with a SUPER SOLID KICK DRUM! The kick drum I used in this composition, is one that I am quite fond of in GarageBand, you could say, it’s my absolute favourite kick drum, I know I’ve said that on more than one occasion, and that kick drum is... the kick drum from the “Modern 909” kit! The pattern on the kick drum patch went like this... quarter notes on the first 3 beats, rest, followed by doubling up the kick with eighth notes on the last beat of every bar. It turned out sounding better than I thought it would! What do ya know?! How ‘bout that!

Next, I laid down the “Hacienda” clap where it was just quarter on the 2nd and 4th beats of every bar, except for the second and fourth beats of the last bar of the measure, which is every 8 bars.

Onto the shaker from the “Modern 808” kit, which is a bunch of 8th notes and 16th note triplets, to add some flare and some shuffle! I do love my shuffle beats and patterns, they never get old... at least to me!

Next I tapped the cowbell also from the “Modern 808” kit, in a quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note shuffle style and pattern, which is just used accent the shaker in the previous layer of the composition.

The last element to this drum kit and composition altogether is this sort of wood block clap sound effect from the “Minimalist” kit within “GarageBand”. I played as some quarter notes, a couple rests, and the remainder of it was a bunch of 8th and 16th notes.

The synth patterns, parts, and layers are all probably, without question, some of my most favourite that I have EVER written, performed, produced, or done! To me, they sound ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! I like the drums, as I do in every one of my compositions, but I truly believe that the synthesizers are what make this new instrumental beat composition inspired by another one of Netflix’s most popular series’, “Stranger Things”. So, that’s the story about how this whole new piece came together, I hope you all enjoy this latest composition from me, yours truly, Leigh Dickey, Beats and Speaks, and www.leightdickey.com! 13 Reasons Why Inspired Beat | “Man of the Night” Produced by Leigh Dickey | December 2017 | Beats and Speaks

Picture
Picture

Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! I’ve got some more BRAND SPANKING NEW MUSIC FOR YOU ALL TODAY! This new original piece is inspired by the incredibly popular Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why”. The composition began quite simply, with me just jamming out, muttering around on a keyboard. The first thing I laid down was a kind of stutter step pattern with the “Spectrum Echo” synth patch from GarageBand. It started with that one pattern and patch and evolved from there. Once I had the “Spectrum Echo” part in place, I thought to myself, “What if I wrote and recorded 2 other separate patterns with two different patches, but all the parts, patches, and patterns sounded similar to one another?” Guess what?! That’s exactly what I did, and that’s exactly what happened! So, building on top of the “Spectrum Echo” pattern, I then used the “Soft Analog” patch to lay down a subtle, more smooth sounding piano type part. All the synth parts within this composition were written, created, and built with the mindset of someone who is walking up and down a flight or several flights of stairs, in a sort of calm but cool manner. The difference between the “Spectrum Echo” part and the “Soft Analog” pattern is that in the “Soft Analog” pattern, the notes I wrote and played are held for a little longer, whereas, the “Spectrum Echo” pattern has notes that are a little more punchy and short. The last synth patch and part, I wrote, created, and put in place was from the “Deep House Bass”. With this pattern and patch, I wanted it to have the feel and pace of someone who was walking down a flight or again, flights of stairs, at least for the most part. Another reason I decided on using the “Deep House Bass” was to accent the whole instrumental composition with a real deep and low sounding bass and bass line overall. With the synthesizer patterns all laid down, I moved onto my favourite part of any of my compositions, THE D-R-U-M-S, DRUMS! The construction of the drum kit for this new composition began with a clap from the “Deep End” kit within GarageBand, where I put a quarter note on every 2nd and 4th beat of every bar, except in the fourth and eighth bars, where I created a sort of clap run to launch into the rest of the song and instrumental. To add a little more pop and snap to the clap from the “Deep End” kit, I added a clap from the “Infinity” kit where the pattern was a quarter note on every second and fourth beat of every bar. Next, I created the whistle part from the “Dembow” kit within GarageBand, which has a shuffle feel and where on the back half of every fourth beat of every fourth bar, it runs together with the clap from the “Deep End” kit to really add a cool accent to the composition, and I think it just sounds SUPER AWESOME! One of my favourite parts to any drum kit I have ever written, created, produced, and performed! To start out the drums on the first beat of every bar, I went with the kick drum from the “Modern 909” kit within GarageBand. It’s without a doubt, my favourite kick drum patch and sound. It’s laid out in a quarter pattern on the first and third beats of every bar, until I double it on the fourth beat of every fourth bar, just to signify a change in the song and composition, and to switch up the feeling of the track just a bit. The final addition to not only the drum kit in this composition, but the whole composition altogether was the snare drum from the “Modern 808” kit where I laid down a quarter note on every beat of every bar, except in the 4th and 8th bars, where I doubled it to make a couple eighth notes, then finishing the pattern off with a 16th note triplet pattern. There it is, my friends! The story of my latest original instrumental beat composition, “Man of the Night”, which is inspired by the incredibly popular Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why”. I hope you all enjoy this latest piece, and if you like what you see and hear, then PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL to keep up with my latest releases and goings on! Thanks everybody! Asking For A Gift Back! | Beats and Speaks Podcast | December 2017

Picture

Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! Another episode of the Beats and Speaks Podcast for you all today! On this episode, I share the story of a former family friend who bought me a gift FOR MY BIRTHDAY, and then, less than a year later, by Christmas and the holiday season of that same year, they asked for it back! Without further ado, let’s get into this little adventure! The former family friend in question is actually an old friend of my dad’s, how they got along so well I WILL NEVER KNOW, but that’s another story for another time, and truthfully is just a can of worms that I do not want to open! Getting back to the topic at hand, this old friend of my dad’s moved in with us for a few months while his apartment was undergoing some renovations and repairs. This friend and I were always cordial with one another and struck up somewhat of a friendship through osmosis, since they were living with us. Just as a side note, this friend of my dad’s has known me since I was baby because he had known my dad, at that point for more than 30 years by then. This friend also knew that I was disabled and had cerebral palsy. One day, the friend comes to me and tells me that I need to get out more, and that I should do something for my upcoming birthday. I just said, thank you for your input and advice. I appreciate it, but I’m doing just fine. They then say that they need to go buy groceries and they would like it if I tagged along. I thought about it for a second and agreed to go. Minutes later, we get into this person’s car, make our way to a local drug store, which is one of Canada’s big chains, and this chain also happens to sell assistive medical devices, like walkers, canes, et cetera. I was in between walkers at this point, and to buy a new walker would have been too much money because they have always been REALLY EXPENSIVE, even back when this took place. So, we’re going through the drug store, we make our way down the medical supplies aisle, he takes a cane off the wall, and then hands it to me. My first thought was, what in the world is this for?! This person’s then said that it was a gift, for my birthday, and that they wanted to help me by buying this cane for me, just to make it easier for me to get around, which I thought was incredibly thoughtful and generous. I said, thank you, we finished up this shopping trip and left. I was happy to have the cane, was incredibly to this person for buying it and giving it to me for my birthday, and for the rest of their time living with my family and I, we got along fine. After they had moved back to their apartment, we would talk occasionally, get together and hang out from time to time, as well. Shortly after this person had moved back to their apartment, I was given a new walker by another friend of mine, who had no use for it, so they gave it to me, which of course, I was so, so grateful for! As a consequence, I guess, I started using the walker more, simply because the walker provided more support and I preferred having more support, in terms my mobility. I would use the cane from the friend of my dad’s occasionally, but since I had gotten the new walker, I used that more than the cane. This friend of my dad’s found out that I was using the walker more than the cane and called me day, around Christmas and the holidays of that same year, and said, I know that I got you that cane as a birthday gift, but since you’re using the walker more, can I have the cane back? He had said that another one of his friends could use the cane because they were having issues with their own mobility. To which, I said no. The reason I said no is because the cane was given to me FOR MY BIRTHDAY, IT WAS A GIFT, and asking for a gift back is something that nobody would or should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE DO, plus this friend of my dad’s was going to give the cane to a friend of his who was also a capable adult, and capable speaking up for themselves. I come to find out later, the friend of the friend of my dad’s didn’t need the cane and was just looking for a way to collect workers compensation! Needless to say, THAT ABSOLUTELY SENT ME THROUGH THE ROOF and my family and I have NEVER spoken to or seen this person since then. We just cut this person out and dropped them entirely, which I will say is and was, at the time and to this day, FOR THE BETTER! Our lives are much better for it! Well, there you go! That’s the story and my experience with someone asking for a gift back. I hope you all enjoyed the story. The Young and the Restless Inspired Beat | “Genoa” Produced by Leigh Dickey | December 2017 | Beats and Speaks

Picture
Picture

Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! I’ve got more BRAND SPANKING NEW MUSIC FOR YOU ALL TODAY! A new original instrumental beat composition inspired by one of the most popular and longest running shows in daytime television, “The Young and the Restless”. The piece is entitled “Genoa”, and its title is taken from the fictional city where “The Young and the Restless” is set. I created, wrote, performed, and produced it in what I would consider being in the same vein as “Nadia’s Theme”, which was written by Barry De Vorzon and Perry Botkin, Jr. in 1971 and has been used as the theme to “The Young and the Restless”, since it hit the airwaves in March of 1973.

The composition began with a classical piano patch in GarageBand that I pitched up an octave or two. The classical piano was a scale played as a bunch of eighth notes, and underneath that I laid down a single chord using a grand piano patch, played in a couple different ways, which was lowered an octave. I think that both piano patches and parts fit together real well. The classical piano eighth note scale part has a sort of medium, yet upbeat feel all at the same time. The chord I played on the grand piano patch has a happy, mellow, and smooth feel, which I think only compliments the classical piano, something like left hand, right hand, or peanut butter and jelly, THEY JUST GO TOGETHER AND WORK REAL, REAL, WELL! So, short answer for that, I’M SUPER HAPPY!

I decided not to use a bass line in this composition because the composition that this new piece is inspired by and used as the theme to “The Young and the Restless, “Nadia’s Theme” doesn’t have or use a bass line, and for what it is, it’s an awesome piece all on its own! So, that’s why I didn’t use a bass line in this new composition entitled, “Genoa”.

The next step in this new instrumental beat composition was, what most, if not everybody, including myself would consider the most important part to any musical piece, THE DRUMS! I started on the drums with a kick drum from the “Dembow” kit in GarargeBand. The pattern is pretty straightforward, quarter notes on every beat of every bar, except for skipping the second beat every 2 bars, and the the first beats of the fourth, sixth, and eighth bars respectively. The next part to the “Genoa” drum kit was a snare drum from the “Electronic Pop” kit, where it’s played and placed on every second beat as a quarter note, and then played as an eighth note on the last beat of the fourth and eighth bars. From there, I added the shaker from the “Classic Drum Machine” kit, written and played with a lot of shuffle and consisting of a ton of eighth and sixteenth note triplets. Finally, the last piece to the “Genoa” drum kit was a tambourine played in the same pattern as the kick drum from the “Dembow” kit, just to act as an accenting point on the whole composition.

I think every element of this new instrumental beat composition, “Genoa”, which is inspired by “The Young and the Restless” and it’s theme, “Nadia’s Theme”, fits, works, and goes together, REALLY, REALLY WELL, and it’s one of the pieces and compositions that I am most proud of! So, I hope you all enjoy, “Genoa”, and if you like what you see and hear, then PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL to keep up with my latest releases and goings on! Thanks everybody! Talk to you all again soon!

Cheers,

Leigh Dickey

Choices: Stories You Play - It Lives in the Woods Inspired Beat | “In The Woods” Produced by Leigh Dickey | December 2017 | Beats and Speaks | www.leightdickey.com

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture

Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! I’ve got some BRAND SPANKING NEW MUSIC FOR YOU ALL TODAY! This brand new piece is inspired by one of my favourite mobile games, “Choices: Stories You Play” and one of my favourite books within that game, “It Lives in the Woods”. The “It Lives in the Woods” in “Choices: Stories You Play” game is a horror themed book, and that’s what I wanted to compose and put down in the form of a new original music piece. The original piece I came up with was something I called, “In The Woods”, and it all started with a classical piano pattern and patch through GarageBand. The piano was the beginning and the main instrument that I wanted in the new composition. I raised the octave 1 or 2 times, just to give it a higher pitch and a brighter tone. I went from there and added a pattern with the “Supergroup Lead”, for a little extra oomph and flavour. It’s also to add a slight science fiction element, so there’s that, too! The bass line and bass patch is from the “Exoplanet” patch within GarageBand. It’s got a short, punchy, VERY NOTICEABLE feel. The pattern consists of half notes, eighth notes, and some quarter notes going down in a scale. One of my favourite bass lines I’ve written on one of my favourite pieces I have written, composed, produced, and performed. Those are the main synth patterns and lines within this track, this composition, and from there, I moved onto composing the drums. The first part of the drum kit was the clap from the “Hacienda” kit in GarageBand. The pattern was a lot of sixteenth notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes. The objective for the drum kit was a dance, club, and pop feel, and I just kept building on top of that. The kick drum was next, and with that pattern and patch, it was much the same of the “Hacienda” clap, just with 2 or 3 extra notes added. I wanted to then add a shaker pattern, and used the shaker from one of the stock kits, before the update within GarageBand for the iPad, the “Big Room” kit, which was again much the same of the clap and kick drum patterns, just more straight ahead. The last thing I put in this new original instrumental beat composition was the symbol pattern, which consisted of mainly sixteenth notes, eighth notes, and lastly a few quarter notes. The symbol was used and written for the composition to act as that “ONE LAST THING” or really the thing that it seemed to be missing. So, I added it, and the rest is history! “In The Woods” is easily one of my favourite compositions I have ever put together, and like I said, it’s inspired by one of my favourite mobile games, “Choices: Stories You Play” and one of my favourite books within that game, “It Lives in the Woods”. Here it is in all its glory! I hope you all enjoy this latest new original instrumental beat composition piece! Thanks everybody! Talk to you all again soon! Bad Regifting Ideas at Christmas! | Beats and Speaks Podcast | December 2017 | Beats and Speaks | Leigh Dickey | www.leightdickey.com

Picture
Picture

Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! Brand new episode of the Beats and Speaks Podcast for you all today! This episode is all about Regifting at Christmas and the holidays! I personally don’t have a problem with regifting things to other people or receiving things that have been regifted, and I understand that it’s the thought that counts, and Christmas isn’t about the presents one can receive, that said, this story is one instance where I have a problem with regifting during the Christmas and holiday season, and I’m sure you will all see why. First off, let me say that I am INCREDIBLY APPRECIATIVE OF EVERYTHING THAT I DO HAVE AND RECEIVE, I’M VERY GRATEFUL, but one Christmas, about 3 or 4 years ago my family and I received a box of chocolates from a family friend, the thing is, I’m MORE THAN 100 PERCENT POSITIVE that the chocolates were a regift because they tasted BAD, ABSOLUTELY RANK, RIPE, INSERT YOUR OWN DESCRIPTIVE WORD HERE! THEY WERE BAD! I’m not knocking the gesture, or the fact that it’s a regift, but when you regift a box of chocolates that are so old that the chocolates SPOIL COMPLETELY (I THINK THE MILK IN THE CHOCOLATES HAD TURNED!) IT’S B-A-D, BAD, BAD, BAD! Like I said, I have no problem with regifting things, I have gotten regifts, I have given regifts, but when you give something to someone because it’s probably a last minute gift, and it’s something extra from years gone by, and you don’t think to yourself that maybe this might be a BAD IDEA... THEN THAT’S WHEN I WILL LOSE MY RABBIT ASS MIND! I mean, my family, friends, and I had a couple chocolates, and we instantly knew something was wrong. They didn’t taste right, like they had spoiled, which sucks, but we cou;dn’t eat them, obviously. It was a nice gesture, but it didn’t end well for any of us! Some regifting ideas are good, some are great, and in this case and probably many others, some are ABSOLUTELY, WITH NO QUESTION, A BAD IDEA! What are some regifts that you have gotten or given? Let me know! That’s the story of some bad regifted chocolates and my opinion on regifting, not only at Christmas and the holidays, but at any time during the year. Hope you all enjoyed it. Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! More BRAND SPANKING NEW MUSIC FOR YOU ALL TODAY! This new instrumental beat composition is inspired by one of the greatest names in rap and hip hop, EMINEM! I wanted this new original piece to have a sort of dark, ominous feel to it, like you’d be walking through the woods or taking a short cut home on a really late night, and as such, it happens to be dark! The sun’s gone down, the world’s gone to sleep, and it’s pitch black, where you can’t see a thing! The creation of this new original instrumental beat composition began with the “Tempo Massimo” lead synth, which I pitched a couple octaves lower than what the default is in GarageBand. I wanted to see if pitching the octave lower on a lead synth could be used as a kind of bass or bass line somehow, and it worked! I even thought initially that I would need to add a bass patch, to act as the actual bass line, but with the “Tempo Massimo” lead synth pitched 2 or 3 octaves lower than what it normally is as a default in GarageBand, I realized that adding an actual bass patch wouldn’t work, that it was pointless, and that the “Tempo Massimo” lead synth pitched lower worked just fine. I then played the same pattern from the “Tempo Massimo” patch on the “Fifth Element” lead synth patch, which I pitched an octave or 2 higher than its default would be. I used the “Fifth Element” synth lead not only because it’s one of my favourite lead patches within GarageBand, but also because I wanted this composition to have a bit of science fiction flavour, and I think the flavour I was looking for and set out to add is there. The last synth part I added to this new original composition was from the “Supergroup Lead”, and I added that to act and have something to sit underneath both the “Tempo Massimo” and “Fifth Element” leads, as sort of an call and answer feel in this new composition. I think all the leads work together SUPER WELL, and here’s a bonus tidbit, all the synthesizers within the new original instrumental beat composition are all lead synthesizer patches. After all the synth parts were in place, I moved on to constructing the drums. The drums began with probably, more than likely my favourite kick drum within GarageBand, the kick drum from the “Modern 909” kit, and I laid it down in a way that most dance pop songs are produced. The “Modern 909” kick drum in a way is subtle, punchy, and somewhat in your face, you know it’s there and exists, all at the same time. It’s a good jumping off point when it comes to constructing drums within GarageBand. To add to the dark and ominous feel of the overall track, I laid down a glockenspiel, which was pitched 2 octaves higher than what its default setting is, just so it’s an element of the composition that sits on top of EVERYTHING ELSE! Again, in my opinion, and I do have one, I think it worked and works together with everything really well! Getting back to the drum kit. After the kick drum was in place, I added a snare drum from the “Modern 808” kit on the 2nd and 4th beats of every bar, doubling it for eighth notes on the fourth beat. To give the snare drum some extra pop, I laid down a clap pattern using the “Crate Digger” kit in the same spots as the “Modern 808” snare drum, and a little extra oomph is always good! The last element I added to the drum kit and the whole composition overall was the shaker pattern from the “Classic Drum Machine” kit. With the shaker pattern I wanted to have something with a little pep, a little shuffle, and the shaker felt like, to me anyway, like it was and would be the one thing that this track would be missing, so that’s another reason I added it, and I love how it sounds, how the whole instrumental composition sounds. I think it’s good, great, I like it, and I hope you all like it as well.
