10/3/2017 0 Comments Halifax Cafe Goes “Screen Free” After 5PM, Sparks Social Media Backlash! My Question is Why? Beats and SpeaksHey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! I’ve got another observation blog, vlog, and opinion piece for you all today! This story is originally out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The original story states that the Lion and Bright Cafe is a “screen free” zone after 5PM daily, which has caused some backlash on social media. The enstablishment in question is not only a cafe, but during the evening hours is a bar, which as you can imagine is a very social space and environment, and that is what the owner of the Lion and Bright is trying to encourage, social interaction with each other! I, for one absolutely love the idea! What I don’t understand is all the backlash. Is it that difficult to disconnect from your laptop, your tablet, your phone, and your work? You will survive without being connected to the internet for a few hours! Ya know, before the internet, social media, and the world being so connected with just a matter of keystrokes, people actually talked to one another, we spoke with our words and not our thumbs. We would look people in the eye when we talked to them. We payed attention more, we took more of an interest in other people’s interests and life, whether they were friends, family, co-workers, or even a complete stranger. I mean, in my opinion, I think the world was much more connected before the advent of the internet and social media. I stand wholeheartedly behind the owner and staff at the Lion and Bright Cafe, good on ya for going screen free! Don’t get me wrong, with the explosion of the internet and social media, along the fact that to do anything, literally ANYTHING in the world, all you need is a WiFi connection, and in a way with the internet and social media we all are more connected, but I think and believe that the world as a whole and the people in it are sorely missing vital social and communication skills. It’s great that the internet and social media has connected us all with just a keystroke, and our lives are easier because of it, but we’re missing a vital component, and that is the actual human aspect of interaction, the looking someone in the eye, the shaking someone’s hand, the looking up and around us to see what the world has to offer, all of its natural beauty, and I think we need that back. I’m just saying the Light and Bright Cafe has the right idea, and for a more connected world that we now live in, we really more disconnected and we grow further and further apart with each passing day that we’re constantly staring at screens, whether they happen to be laptop, tablet, phone, or anything else that can draw our attention away from what and who is most important in our lives, and that is the people we surround ourselves with.
