Hey Everybody! How’s it going? Hope you all are awesomely well! I’ve got more BRAND SPANKING NEW MUSIC FOR YOU ALL TODAY! This latest original instrumental composition piece is entitled, “The New Kind”, and is inspired by the hit CBS television show, “Hawaii Five-0”, that stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan.

The beginnings of “The New Kind” started with the “Brass Ensemble” part. I wanted the brass to stand out amongst and above the rest and majority of the composition. It, like most everything in my work is a variation on scales. The brass part consists of half and sixteenth notes, going up and down on a scale. Next, I raised an electric piano patch a couple octaves and laid out a pattern that was mainly dotted half notes, along with eighth and sixteenth notes going down a scale. I then used a “Classical Grand” patch, lowered a couple octaves, which acts as the bass line in this piece, and there I played some very simple chords, as well as going down a scale to get the desired effect and sound. To add a little something extra to “The New Kind”, I added the “B Movie” synth bass, just to really bring some oomph to the “Classical Grand” patch and pattern. That was the last of the instrumental parts before I moved onto the drum kit.

The first element to this piece’s drum kit was a hi-hat, which was put in place in a 16th note shuffle, swing kind of pattern. Next, there was the clap from the “Modern 808” kit, which is a 16th note on every second and fourth beat of every bar, except at the end of every 4th bar, where I doubled it, to make two eighth notes. Getting to the kick drum, finally! Here, I used the kick drum from the “Infinity” kit, with a 16th on every beat of every bar, except for every fourth bar, where I just played them as a group of 32nd notes, to signify a change or “in point”, if you will. That’s without a doubt one of my most favourite kick drum lines that I have ever done! Last, but certainly not least, was the final part to not only the drum kit, but the composition overall. I used a symbol hit from the “Crate Digger” kit in the same manner and pattern as the “Modern 808” clap, just to accent the whole composition and add that little dash of extra!

There ya have it! The story of my latest piece, “The New Kind”, which is inspired by the hit CBS television show, “Hawaii Five-0”. I hope you all enjoy it! Bonus Tidbit! - The title of this composition, “The New Kind” comes from a line that Alex O’Loughlin says to Will Yun Lee in the pilot episode.

Cheers,

Leigh Dickey
