It's time to do the dance of joy, again! A reboot of the incredibly popular 80's and early 90's sitcom, "Perfect Strangers" is in the works at HBO Max. The original series, which aired from 1986 to 1993, and was an anchor on ABC's "TGIF" lineup, starred Mark Linn Baker and Bronson Pinchot as "Larry Appleton" and "Balki Bartokomous', respectively as distant cousins living and working together in Chicago.
Of course, with the original series run lasting eight seasons and 150 episodes, Baker and Pinchot's beloved characters navigate life, work, relationships, and everything in between. Personally, I think the "Balki and Larry" character relationship is one of the best in television history. Pinchot and Baker had such amazing chemistry together. They were one of the best on screen duos ever.
This reboot, which according to an article from "The Hollywood Reporter", will star Robin Thede and London Hughes as "Poppy" and "Deja', half sisters who are unknown to each other, until they both inherit an apartment that is above a trap yoga studio in New York. From there, they both have to live together and co-exist.
I love the original "Perfect Strangers" series with Pinchot and Baker. It was absolutely hilarious, both Baker and Pinchot played really well off of one another, and just a great show to watch. The theme song is one of my favourite TV themes ever. It's got a total 80's vibe, makes you feel good, makes you feel happy. When it comes to this reboot that will star both Thede and Hughes, I had no idea it was even in the works, it was a total surprise. I will say, this reboot is unexpected, I don't think it is even needed, nothing against Hughes or Thede, but over say, the last decade or so, there have been so many reboots and revival series'. I think the whole TV and movie reboot or revival direction that Hollywood is in, is just lazy and needs to end. Hollywood, you can come up and present new ideas, it's okay. The viewing public likes new, fresh ideas, we're not going to hate you if you give us something new.
This reboot is clearly just a Hollywood cash grab. I don't want to shed a negative light on it, but it's not needed. I haven't seen any of Thede or Hughes' work, but they're clearly two talented individuals who will come together for this project. Before I pass too much judgement, I will say, I will and do want to at least watch the pilot, and then I will render my opinion, whenever it is released and I get a chance to watch it.
The "Perfect Strangers" reboot - a complete surprise, in my opinion, completely not needed, but I will, like I do with everything, give it a chance.
What are your thoughts on the "Perfect Strangers" reboot? Let me know. Thank you for your time.
